Two months!

Wow--what a great season! Great performances (and news coverage) at our sing-a-thon! Amazing performances by our kids with the Madison Opera's Carmen! And coming up:

MSO Christmas Spectacular (December 4, 5, 6): Con Gioia, Cantabile, Ragazzi

And our own concerts series, A Night at the Opera. (Yes, we realize it would be more accurate to call it An Afternoon at the Opera, it's not as catchy!)

Saturday, December 12 (3pm): Purcell, Britten, Holst, Choraliers, Capriccio, Cantilena

Selections from Carmen, Griffelkin, Peter Grimes, Turn of the Screw, The Mikado, The Magic Flute, Rodelinda, Hansel and Gretel, The Fairy-Queen, Lakme, The Flying Dutchman, and more!

Sunday, January 17 (3pm): Con Gioia, Ragazzi, Cantabile

Selections from Carmen, Il Trovatore, The Pirates of Penzance, Fidelio, Macbeth, Eugene Onegin, Midsummer Night's Dream, Gloriana, Dido and Aeneas, The Tender Land, Treemonisha, La Serva Padrona, Iolanthe, and more!

One month!

We're now about one month into our fall rehearsal season. Things are getting busy:

--30 of our kids are in the Madison Opera's production of Carmen

--15 of our kids are singing with the touring production of Abba Mania at the Overture Center

--Our annual sing-a-thon is November 15th

--We'll have singers participating in the first annual Youth in Harmony festival, sponsored by the Capitol Chordsmen

--We have singers performing with Opera for the Young's production of The Elixir of Love at area retirement homes

--Several of our choirs are again singing with the Madison Symphony Orchestra at their Christmas Spectacular concerts

--Our fall introductory choirs have begun: almost 30 new MYC singers, ages 7-10!

Our great friends at the Madison Ballet continue to make improvements to the rehearsal studios; rooms have been painted, have begun to be decorated, some soundproofing has been done, and more!

First weekend done!

Wow--what an exciting first weekend of rehearsals! I know a lot of things are different from past seasons. A new space brings new opportunities and challenges! But we're the same MYC as last year...the same great music, the same great learning, the same great fun. I'm looking forward to "getting to know" our new space and continuing to work out any kinks.

To that end, let us know what you thought. Loved it? Hated it? Have a suggestion? Be nice, but tell us what you think!

Rehearsals, new season, and more, oh my!

I miss camp. Yup--I said it. Canceling camp for this season was of the hardest decisions I've ever been a part of in my time at MYC. But I'm still SO excited about starting rehearsals in our new location at the Westgate Studios. It's going to be an amazing year! Our good friends at the Madison Ballet are even painting and doing sound-proofing work to get the rehearsal rooms ready to go.

It's going to be a different kind of experience than we've had in the past. At St. Luke's, we were often the only people in the building (although not always, and rarely on Mondays!). Truly, we had a kind of privacy that most groups don't have. And I hope someday we'll have that again (Anyone have $20 million to build a Youth Arts Center in Madison?).

But for now, we're embarking on an wonderful partnership with a great arts organization and I'm excited about the possibilities for learning and collaboration. We'll get a chance to meet other kids who are learning about the arts--ballet dancers, Irish dancers, and more! Certainly, our experience at Westgate will be different in many ways and we won't have the same type of supervised "public" space that we had at St. Luke's. We will, of course, have Rocky's and Milio's!

Looking forward to rehearsals...
